Sunrocket and Packet8 offer $199 Annual VoIP Internet Phone Service Plans by Debbie Jacobsen

If you're looking for a good value in internet phone service, Sunrocket and Packet8 are two high quality VoIP providers offering residential VoIP for the lowest price. Both of these internet phone service providers offer an unlimited local and long distance calling plan for the incredibly low price of $199 per year. This works out to a monthly cost of less than $17 per month. The only catch is you have to pay the $199 up front.

Both Packet8 and Sunrocket are known for providing excellent customer service and technical support, and both have a good reputation for call quality. Packet8 has been around longer, and is known for excellent quality. Sunrocket users have reported quality issues in the past, but they have made a lot of improvements in this area recently. Both offer the usual "free" calling features that we've come to expect from internet phone service such as voice mail, caller ID, call forwarding, call waiting, etc... (there are so many features associated with VoIP service, that it's safe to say "you get everything you could possibly want or need").

With the $199 "flat fee" annual unlimited plans offered by Packet8 and Sunrocket, you do have to fork over this money up front, but the nice thing is you will never see another charge for a whole year unless you make international calls (billed on a "per minute" basis). Sunrocket started the "all-inclusive" "annual fee" pricing model within the VoIP industry, and it has really caught on. Sunrocket is one of the fastest growing VoIP provider within the US this year.

So if the price, quality of service, and free calling features are about the same for each of these VoIP providers, what is the difference between Packet8 and Sunrocket? As with all internet phone service providers these days, the difference is in the unlimited calling area, the price for "extras" such as international rates and any "freebies" you get.

The Sunrocket unlimited annual plan includes $3.00 in international calling credits per month, which can add up to 100 minutes in international calls depending on location. Packet8 does not offer anything like this. Sunrocket provides free E911 service, which enables emergency services operators to identify your location. Packet8 charges $1.99 per month for E-911. Sunrocket requires no contract, and Packet8 charges a disconnect fee if you cancel service within 1 year. You can get an extra phone number with Sunrocket for $3 per month, and Packet8 charges around $5 for this. Sunrocket's "unlimited calling" area includes the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. Packet8's "unlimited" area includes the US and Canada only.

Whether you choose Packet8 or Sunrocket as your internet phone service provider, you will most likely be pleased with what you get. At less than the cost of a "dial tone" with a traditional phone company, unlimited local and long distance calling for a little over $16 a month is a price that is hard to pass up.

In order to take advantage of the tremendous cost savings associated with internet phone service, you need to have a broadband internet connection in your home. If you want to disconnect your land line service after installing VoIP, you'll want to go with cable internet since this doesn't require a phone line.
